Biochemical and Gene Expression Analyses in Different Poplar Clones: The Selection Tools for Afforestation of Halomorphic Environments

Halomorphic soils cover a significant area in the Vojvodina region and represent ecological economic challenges for agricultural forestry sectors. In this study, four economically important Serbian poplar clones were compared according to their biochemical transcriptomic responses towards mild severe salt stress select most tolerant afforestation of halomorphic soils. Three prospective Populus deltoides (Bora-B229, Antonije-182/81 PE19/66) one hybrid genetic background P. nigraxP. deltoides, e.g., x euramericana (Pannonia-M1) hydroponically subjected NaCl as agent concentration range from 150 mM 450 mM. Results show that stress-responsive induced M1 PE19/66, thus showing they can tolerate environments with high concentrations could be efficient phytoremediation environments. Clone PE19/66 ABA-dependent mechanisms expressing PtP5CS1 gene while clone 182/81 regulate same ABA-independent pathway. To improve tolerance poplar, GRAS/SCL seem promising candidates engineering salt-tolerant clones.
